Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti
Mature Themes
4AD

An art school graduate with a fixation of old goth bands and lo-fi recordings, Ariel Pink’s music is everything but colorless. He’s collaborated with the godfather of home recording R. Stevie Moore and cites his favorite band as The Cure.

With influences like that his newest album Mature Themes will not disappoint. A beautifully chaotic , calm, and dark pop record the album reminds one of the 80’s goth kids who sat outside of their prom smoking cigarettes having serious discussions about Morissey, the meaning of existence and how they just wanted to “get the fuck outta here.”

The music is tight and well calculated but still remains open and ladled with distorted almost indistinguishable sounds. With songs about Masturbation and wanting to eat Schnitzel it’s hard not to see the humour in Ariel Pink’s music. However, as humorous as it may be he’s an artist to be taken seriously. With an extremely unique psyche-sound all of his own, his live shows are thoroughly entertaining and surprising. Ariel Pink’s discography is definitely worth paying attention to but Mature Themes is a step in a new direction.
